NEW WEBMASTER
A huge thank you to Colleen
Berg, mother to the newest 98B

over as webmaster for LAFC. She
doesn't linger long as she
travels all over town ferrying
her 3 boys to 3 schools and all
their extracurricular
activities. Fortunately, her
laptop plugs into her minivan
port - quite handy for web
authoring.

COACHING CORNER -
Featuring Austen Collie, Assistant Coach 97B
|
Recovering from and
Coping with Injuries
Austen Collie
97B Assistant Coach
I have been playing the game of soccer
for 18 years now and I have no regrets.
For the first 14 of those years I
thought I was invincible. That all
changed four years ago when I went up
for a header off a corner kick in
practice and a player from the Tech
Women's team, pushed me from behind in
mid air and I landed on the lateral side
of my ankle. I thought after a week I
would be ready to play again. I was
wrong... I did physical therapy but I
came back to soccer too fast and
re-injured my ankle. For the next year
I went through this cycle of resting,
rehabilitation and returning TOO SOON.
Finally, I decided that I was going to
do the RIGHT thing for my team and
myself and sit out for a couple of
months and really work on my ankle
rehabilitation exercises.
After a couple of months of sitting out
and working hard on my therapy, I
decided that I would return to playing.
During a side to side shuffling drill I
felt my knee lock up. My family doctor
misdiagnosed the MRI as a torn ACL
(making me really nervous) but the
surgeon revised the diagnosis as a torn
medial meniscus that would require
surgery and at least 2 months off of
soccer. It took 4 months before I felt
comfortable playing soccer again as each
individual recovers on their own
timeline. But as the knee recovered the
ankle did not. So I had surgery to
tighten the ligaments in my ankle. It
has been seven months now from the last
time I played soccer. However, even
after all these injuries I will still be
able to play and I will play
competitively again.
I have learned that you can never give
up, and you won't give up if you love
and enjoy something enough. Injuries
will happen to EVERYONE if you play any
sport long enough, and you have to
maintain a positive outlook. For
example, all these injuries gave me more
time to work on school and hang out with
friends.
Again, players should TAKE THEIR TIME
BEFORE returning to competition. It is
better to
overestimate the amount of rest
you need, because returning to soccer
too soon can double your original
prescription of rest. Additionally,
follow the physical therapists
suggestions as injuries are not cured
solely by rest.

Parent involvement is one of the unique
aspects of our club. Our parent
volunteers run many aspects of our club
from being board members to maintaining
a team treasury. These jobs come in all
sizes so please consider helping in some
way.

COACHES CORNER.
Featuring Sean Pitman, LAFC Trainer & Coach
|

Formation versus Shape
Many players, coaches and parents hear the
lingo of soccer and go "HUH!" One such
situation is the phrases FORMATION & SHAPE.
What do they mean and how does this help my
player?
A FORMATION like (4-4-2) is short hand code,
which describes the framework with which a
coach will base his playing tactics. It also
defines the PRIMARY role of each player's
position, i.e. 4 players have PRIMARY
defensive roles, 4 have PRIMARY midfield
roles and 2 with attacker roles.
A coach will use this structure as a
skeleton to develop a tactical plan
utilizing the strengths and weaknesses of
their players and their own personality of
attack or defensive mindedness.
However, the SHAPE of a team is not
dependant on either the chosen formation or
the players a coach has. SHAPE changes as a
result of (1) ball possession and (2) the
area of the field being defended or
attacked. A team's SHAPE expands in attack
and contracts in defense. For example, if a
ball is lost in the attacking third an
attacker may become first defender
regardless of his PRIMARY role as an
attacker.
SHAPE is dynamic and relies on the
understanding of where to be in relation to
the ball irrespective of a player's primary
role in a given formation.
SHAPE is founded on concepts of depth,
width, mobility, penetration, balance and
concentration. The SHAPE (expansion and
contraction) is determined by the continuous
changing of ball possession. This is called
the MECHANICS OF PLAY.
The MECHANICS in defense is rooted in 1st,
2nd, and 3rd defender methods. The MECHANICS
in attack are based on efficient passing,
dribbling and support running.
To "maintain shape" a player must have
control over the MECHANICS of ball
possession. At practices, small sided games
allow your coaches to develop players'
understanding of the MECHANICS of ball
possession. The wall pass and other
combination plays, closing down and covering
are examples of such.
Mastery of the MECHANICS will lead to better
team shape rather than focusing on fixed
positions on a field. So when the coach
yells "maintain your shape" to your players
you will know what the coach means.
This is one coach's opinion. What do you
think?

IT'S
ALL IN THE FAMILY - Sibling players
|
|
Do you think one child in
club soccer keeps a family busy? Imagine
having two.
Believe it or not four Arsenal families
have two children playing on LAFC
teams. This month we will highlight 2
of those families:
|
|
The Vann's
Taylor
Vann (94G): Taylor is a
Freshman at Monterey High School who stays
busy with soccer, school, and her church
youth group. She is in all honors and
Pre-AP classes (GPA of 4.3) including some
college credit. She played for the JV
soccer team at Monterey and was brought up
to Varsity when needed. The JV team from
Monterey dominated this past season loosing
only 3 games. On the '94G team Taylor is
known for her accurate corner kicks and
powerful throw-ins. She has played for
Angel since the inception of the team 5
years ago. When she is not on the soccer
field, she is on stage. Taylor has a love
of singing and drama and music is her
passion. Her summer will be filled with
volunteer work at the Boys and Girls Club
(soccer instructor), Student life camp at
Padre Island, and working for Spectra Sports
Medicine as she has an interest in becoming
a Physical Therapist. She hopes to continue
her soccer journey throughout high school
and on to college
Kodey Vann (98G): Kodey is a 5th
grader at Roscoe Wilson Elementary. Kodey
is excited to be attending Evans Jr High
next year. She has a huge love of history
and is saving for a trip to New England with
her Uncle, a history teacher and coach at
Cooper. She also enjoys science and PE.
Kodey loves the game of soccer but is also
interested in tennis, volleyball, and
basketball. She spends lots of time at the
park working on her soccer skills and
playing tennis. Summer will be filled with
VBS at the Boys and Girls Club of Lubbock,
Volleyball camp, Basketball camp, and
swimming. Kodey spends a lot of time on
stage with drama department at her church.
Singing and watching movies is how she
spends her spare time. She also is looking
forward to learning to play an instrument
in Jr High. The guitar or violin is high on
her wish list. Kodey is ready for the
transition to Jr High and has been counting
down for summer for months!

The Pitman's
Thomas and Courtney Pitman
Courtney Pitman (95/96G)- Courtney is
a handy striker or attacking midfielder with
a booming left foot. She is a current West
Texas 95 ODP pool player. Last year she made
Region 3 New Mexico Regional 95 ODP Team.
Courtney is a true sportsperson representing
her middle school Evans in volleyball and
last week at the City track and field meet.
She helped Evans in five events medaling in
Long Jump, 100m relay, and mile relay, and
winning the individual 400 m in just 65
seconds. Props go to Evans 7th Grade girls
for winning the City meet. Courtney is also
a LSA referee. Courtney is also a member of
the National Junior Honors Society.
Courtney loves to compete and hates to lose.
She has other interests including
socializing with her friends on Friday
night, the movies, music, and fashion. Her
favorite meal is bacon and eggs.
Thomas Pitman (98B)- On the pitch
Thomas plays both in goal and mostly
defense. He loves soccer and he is either
playing it throughout the house, at practice
or the soccer video games Pro Evolution or
FIFA. He is a fifth grader at Honey
Elementary where he amassed some 60 plus
miles running during his schools Thursday
running club day. He loves to run and has
done well in competitive running with the
West Texas Running Club winning some 2K
runs. Once soccer started he stopped running
competitively because "soccer comes first".
Thomas was very upset that he was not born
in Brazil so one day he could play for their
national team. Also, Thomas loves to rub it
in when Liverpool loses.

MEET THE
TEAM - 97 BOYS: Angel Gutierrez and AJ Garza
|
Angel Gutierrez is a good son,
brother and friend. He is a 6th
grader at Atkins Middle School where
he plays drums in the band. Off the
pitch he enjoys drawing, making
origami figures, and playing
Nintendo with his little brother.
Angel also likes to camp and go deer
hunting with his father. He almost
bagged his first ten point buck last
season but the deer slipped away.
Angels father is teaching him how to
cut and install tile. Although
Angel is a quiet boy out in the
world, at home he talks a lot and
has a special talent at making his
sister go crazy! He is a great
dancer - a skill which comes in
handy out manuevering his opponents
on the field
Angel has been known to help out at
soccer practices for his little
brothers' team where the players
think he is really cool. He
attends Our Lady of Guadalupe
Catholic Church every Wednesday and
Sunday.
|
|
AJ Garza, a current Arsenal '97 player, has
played soccer since he was 4 years old.
Usually he can be found on the right or left
wing, but he has played just about
everywhere. AJ hopes that his diversity and
love for the game will provide him with many
more years on the pitch and open up other
opportunities. He recently entered the ODP
pool and is hoping to participate in their
camp or tournament this summer. Outside of
soccer, AJ is a straight A student at
Trinity Christian. Next year he will be
transferring to Evans and is excited about
this change. Besides soccer, AJ enjoys
video games, watching tv and playing with
his baby brother. During the summer, he
tries to spend every free moment at the
swimming pool. In about 10 years, if AJ
doesn't get picked up by the EPL, he'll
probably just settle for being a rocket
scientist.

Arsenal F.C. Runs "Open" Training Sessions
|
|
All teams in the Club run 'open'
training sessions meaning that any
player may workout with our trainers and
coaches. If the player is currently
rostered on an existing, registered club
team, then they need only fill out a
single coaches release and have the
current coach sign the release. Players
who are on recreation teams, or who are
below the age of U11, need only fill out
a separate form. If you know of a player
that would like variety in their
training, more advanced technical
workouts, or just more training, contact
one of our coaches at
www.lubbockarsenalfc.com. For more
information on the necessary forms or
questions, contact Aaron Yoshinobu (97B
Coach), 806-773-9333,
