Girls Take Second In the Nation
Congratulations to the '94 Arsenal Girls on
taking 2nd in the Nation at the 3v3 Live
National Championships held in Austin last
month. Avery, Shannon, Jordan and Marissa
(below) played an outstanding tournament
beating team after team in a grueling
format. In the Championship game injuries
and exhaustion took over and though playing
down 2v3 at some portions of the game the
girls gave it there all and only came up
short losing by one goal. It was truly a
very proud moment for a coach, way to
represent the Arsenal Soccer Club. I would
like also to thank Victoria and Ebony who
could not make it to the National
Tournament, but helped the team win it all
at Regionals. - Coach Angel
Cuevas.

'97 Boys
Win WTPL U12 Spring 2009 Season
Believe it or not, the LAFC 97B team
wrapped up their Spring 2009 season play
with a resounding win against cross town
rivals, Lonestar 97B Red, 8-1. With the
two victories against San Angelo club
teams in latest March, the 97 Boys
scored a total of 22 goals for and 1
against in three matches. Scheduling
snafu's at WTPL prevent any more
standing games. However, the '97 Boys
will play a number of non-standing
matches in preparation for their bid at
the State Cup in early May. Shown below
are (top) Alex Loredo, Zach Appleton, AJ
Garza, Colt Cagle, Adam Beikmann, Collin

off a resounding win, they
weren't able to overcome the
point differential and the Black

The '97 Boys team would like to
introduce their new Assistant Coach,
Austen Collie. Austen was born in
Tokyo, Japan, then moved to Los
Angeles, California, and finally to
Lubbock, TX, at the age of 5 years
old after his father accepted a job
in the biology department at TTU.
Austen has been playing soccer since
arriving in Lubbock, and played
under Jamie Faz in that other soccer
club here in Lubbock through high
school. Austen played for Lubbock
High School (district champions in
2003). Following high school in
2004, Austen joined the TTU club
team and former Sanddevils (now
Lubbock Lonestar) semipro indoor
team here in Lubbock to the present.
In 2007, the TTU club team finished
2nd in the nation at the NIRSA
Collegiate Soccer Sport Club
Championships and Austen was
selected to be apart of the all
tournament team. Austen is currently
a senior at TTU majoring in Health
and Exercise Sports Science with a
minor in Biology. Following
graduation in December 2009, he
plans to pursue a masters in
Strength and Conditioning.
Welcome, Austen, to the Arsenal Family.

COACHES CORNER.
Featuring Sean Pitman, LAFC Trainer & Coach

What is the American Style of Soccer?
American soccer is unique and young.
Soccer in the United States has taken
years of evolution from being a
foreigners sport to that of the sport of
choice for many youth athletes. We have
replicated many styles, the Dutch, the
English, the Brazilian, and the German
styles. Each has their place in our
evolution but we have our own American
style. So what is it?
It is said that the 4 most outstanding
aspects of American soccer players are:
1. Athletic ability (size, strength,
fitness, conditioning etc);
2. Attitude (competiveness, desire,
enthusiasm, strength etc);
3. Work ethic (effort,
aggressiveness, hustle etc); and
4. Coachability.
There however is one underlying feature
that is truly American- the strong
desire to play well and WIN. Success is
very American. However, the emphasis on
winning may delay or stunt the
development of the beautiful game.
Winning I believe is the byproduct of
well conditioned technically correct
American athletes.
How then do we incorporate the strengths
of the American player with today's
game?
My answer is to develop the athletic
ability with strong technique. The
American youth player is motivated and
well conditioned. If we merge this with
a fast attacking style play with width,
possession, accuracy and strong pressure
the American style of soccer is truly
ours.
The objective for coaches is to try and
bring all of this together in our
players to continue the way forward so
the USA's continued success on the word
soccer stage is emulated by other
playing nations.

The Lubbock Arsenal 95 Girls have
accomplished many firsts as a new team. The
team has made great efforts in the West
Texas Premier League during the fall season.
Although outnumbered by their opponents, the
team stood bravely and gave it all they
could. In between the seasons the Ladies
qualified at a regional 3 v 3 tournament for
the winter nationals to be held in Round
Rock Texas. On this stage, the team faced 2
days of stiff competition. They played teams
from Indiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South
and East Texas. They finished 6th in the
nation. This was a major accomplishment.
To go with these achievements, special
recognition should be given to four players
who have made the West Texas ODP pool.
Mercedes Perez and Reagan Springfield in the
96 ODP, and Victoria Vigil and Courtney
Pitman in the 95 Girls ODP player pool. The
Club congratulates your dedication to
soccer. You represent our club well!

MEET THE
TEAM - 97 BOYS: Trae Exum and Peyton Elliott
|
LAFC '97B midfielder, Trae Exum, is
12 years old and is a 7th grader at
Cooper. He skipped fourth grade so
is youngest in his class. He is a
member of the National Junior Honor
Society. He also competes in UIL
every year and this year got first
place in two events. Trae has
played soccer since he was four
years old. Soccer is the only sport
he has wanted to play, much to the
disappointment of the athletic coach
at Cooper. Trae plays midfield, and
has really enjoyed being a part of
the Arsenal team.
Trae is very outgoing and loves to
be around friends and play video
games He is a very sweet kid who
really pushes himself to be the best
he can be whether with grades or at
a soccer game. He is very
competitive, but still knows how to
have fun.
|
Peyton Elliott is a 6th grader at Terra
Vista Middle School. Although he is a die
hard soccer fan & player; he has many other
interests ("What!?", his coach exclaims
incredulously!). When not on the pitch, he
plays the bassoon for TVMS band where he is
their only "bassoonist". Many of you know
that he enjoys going to the family ranch
where he works cattle, rides horses, hunts &
fishes. (But, does he practice his juggling
there, too?!?) His horses' name is Skippy &
he is more of a work horse than a pet! He
has 2 dogs, Oso (a chocolate lab, border
collie mix) & Chula (a boxer) who he likes
playing with. When it comes to hunting
season, he can be found with a shotgun
trying to sniff out some blue quail or
dove. Peyton is also a bowman & likes to
hide in the brush & annihilate unsuspecting
small game, such as rabbits (don't worry;
there's an abundance of these & they
populate quickly so no need to be concerned
about their extinction). He has always
enjoyed the outdoors & would rather be
outside doing "something fun" than inside
watching TV or playing video games. He does
like video games but he plays in moderation.
His favorite video game is FIFA '08
(whichever one is the latest edition) which
usually inspires him to go outside & kick
the futbol.
Peyton enjoys playing all sports & is
required to do so on a regular basis with
his friends whom are not soccer enthusiasts
(and they call themselves friends?!?!). You
know what they say, if you can't beat 'em,
join 'em. Peyton plays for the '97 boys
team & can be found at forward or midfield.
He is also trying out for the '96 ODP team &
plans on attending the SMU soccer camp this
summer. His future plans include playing at
the collegiate level but we have a long road
ahead of us. Until then.......we'll be
playing lots of soccer for Arsenal! GO
ARSENAL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arsenal F.C. Runs "Open" Training Sessions
|
|
All teams in the Club run 'open'
training sessions meaning that any
player may workout with our trainers and
coaches. If the player is currently
rostered on an existing, registered club
team, then they need only fill out a
single coaches release and have the
current coach sign the release. Players
who are on recreation teams, or who are
below the age of U11, need only fill out
a separate form. If you know of a player
that would like variety in their
training, more advanced technical
workouts, or just more training, contact
one of our coaches at
www.lubbockarsenalfc.com. For more
information on the necessary forms or
questions, contact Aaron Yoshinobu (97B
Coach), 806-773-9333,
