NEWS & EVENTS
Indoor Soccer

How's your team stacking up against the competition?  The first set of standings have been posted.  It looks like Arsenal Black and Arsenal Snipers have taken an early lead.  Way to go!  All of the teams have improved thoughout the season and have displayed some great teamwork.  Although the Maroon team has struggled to get a win, they are the tough team with plenty of fight in them.  These girls are to be commended for their sportsmanship, teamwork and dedication.

Looking Ahead

Beginning in late January, the 97's took on a new coach and a new look and are set to go to the Texas State Cup in May. The team went through a "trial by fire" inauguration at the Georgetown Invitation over the 14-15th of February. The team finished 3rd place, with a 2-2 record, playing some formidable opponents. Training is going very well, and the future looks very bright for the talented players of the '97 team.

98's Take First Place

The LAFC 98 Boys took first place in the Rush Spring Cup (U11) division in Albuquerque, NM, on 6-7 February. The team had a stellar performance playing 8v8 with guest players Conner Dean, Daniel Kiser, and Ian Ward. The team combined for 25 goals for, and allowed only 3 against! Great job, guys, and a great way for new Head Coach, Gibbs Keeton, to ring in the Spring season.

ACL INJURY PREVENTION

While non-impact ACL injuries impact female players at a higher rate than male players, encouraging your child , male or female, to follow the exercises shown in this link may prove worthwhile.

COACHING NEWS  - 98 BOYS
The 98's would like to introduce their new Assistant Coach, Kevin Becker. Kevin grew up playing soccer in Southern California and played on back-to-back California State Championship teams.  He then moved to Arizona where he played for Juventus.  Kevin started on the high school state championship team as a sophomore; and after graduating, he played sweeper for Paradise Valley Community College, where he became great friends with Gibbs Keeton.

Kevin has trained teams with Paul Mariner (assistant coach for the New England Revolution) and in 2004 was awarded the "D" coaching license.  Now here in Lubbock, Kevin is looking forward to coaching and training the youth of our soccer community and working with his great friend Gibbs Keeton.

Welcome, Kevin, to the Arsenal Family.
WHO WE ARE  - 98 GIRLS
Together we are the '98 Arsenal girls soccer team, but we are more then just a team.  We are individuals with different interests and activities.  Leah loves to run and play basketball. Victoria goes to school at the Young Women's Leaders, and she likes to draw and sing.  Tiff likes her dogs, playing Guitar Hero and spending her daddy's money.  Adrienne plays basketball and softball, is in the girl scouts and loves the Cowboys and Texas Tech.  Gabe is a member of Destination Imagination, and she loves to compete.  Hailee loves horses and her friends.  Kendra is in honor choir, likes spending time on the computer and loves to read. Kody loves history, is active in church youth groups, and her favorite singer is Taylor Swift. Analissa has a real passion for track and cross country.  She placed 3rd in the city-wide cross country race.  She loves to dance, shop and hanging with friend. She also love Guitar Hero.  Destiny loves to swim and hang with her friends.  With so many different personalities we still make one great team.  Thanks to all the parents that make it possible.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT - 98 BOYS

Each month we highlight some of the fine achievements of our '98 Boys, outside of soccer (you mean there's life outside of soccer?). This month we highlight our newest player, #5, Michael Berg. Michael, or MB, comes from the Tornadoes and brings stellar mid-defense and mid-field skills to the team. We are very excited by his committing to the team! Here's some bio information on MB. Michael is a 5th grader at Roscoe Wilson (home to fellow 98's James Lovering and Weston Yoshinobu). Besides soccer (is there something besides soccer?!?), his favorite sports to play are wrestling, basketball & football - er, we mean, 'throwball' - on the playground after school. He'd love to teach you how to play cricket, after spending six months in Sri Lanka last spring. He roots for all sports teams from Philadelphia, especially the Eagles. He is open to suggestion for favorite soccer teams (after Arsenal, that is)! Michael is always up for a game. He likes games of all kinds, including board and card games. His favorites are Boggle, Hearts, Monopoly, & Risk (and of course video games that his Dad buys him all the time, like FIFA and Madden). On long car rides, expect him to try to convince everyone to play his favoirte word game, "ghost". He is looking forward to a great season on Arsenal. Give MB a tackle the next time you see him on the pitch. Michael's mom and dad are Colleen and Jordan Berg, who are wonderful folks to chill with on the side line. They have two other boys, Daniel at Lubbock High and Stephen at Hutchinson. And, like every good American, they follow Bruce Springsteen religiously.
MEET   THE   TEAM - 97 BOYS
Collin Couch is a very busy young man. He is in seventh grade at Hutchinson Middle School where he participates in band, tennis, and pre-AP courses. He plays the trumpet and made All Region band this year. He is also one of the few seventh graders who has played on the varsity tennis team. Collin not only loves to play tennis, he also loves to watch it -I did not know until this year that we even had a tennis channel! In his spare time, he also likes to juggle the soccer ball and play video games like Rock Band and Mario Kart. He also likes to pester his little eight-year-old brother Henry.

*****

"Oh Canada, Oh Canada" is the sound you hear every evening as Jared practices his trumpet.  He is first chair, 4 weeks in a row, at Lubbock Cooper Jr. High.  Jared, J-Rod as his soccer mates know him, is also in pre-athletics and maintains an A average in school.  His hobbies include reading, playing video games, and designing with his dad.  He has attended Providence Baptist Church for 5 years where he participates in plays and musicals.  His favorite movie genres are comedies, and he himself is a bit of a comedian.

Soccer has been Jared's passion since he was four years old.  He began with the Talons and continued with them until he was 10 years old when he was able to try out for select.  When he's not watching cartoons, you will find him viewing an EPL, Italian Serie, or Spanish Premiere League game.  His favorite teams are Manchester United, Barcelona, and AC Milan, and the players he admires most are Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Kaka.  Jared isn't the quickest player, but his skills and ability to make smart decisions make up for it.  He plays left/ right mid most of the time allowing him to make great passes.  He would love to play for Mexico one day, and yes, he wants to become a Mexican National!
GETTING READY - 98 GIRLS
The girls have a lot of stuff coming up.  They are getting ready for the TAKS test, middle school is right around the corner and it's time to start shopping for their summer cloths.  They have a few games of indoor left and the spring outdoor season is a few weeks away. With all this going on, they still manage to be at practice with smiles on there faces! We have 10 strong committed player on the field and off.

A LETTER OF THANKS

I wanted to send a huge THANK YOU to everyone in the Arsenal family for all the prayers and well wishes we received.  If you did not hear, my daughter, Victoria  Appleton from the 94 Girls team, sustained a broken femur during the Rush tournament in Albuquerque.  The outpouring of love and offers of assistance were overabundant and immensely appreciated.  To the parents and players of the 94 Girls team, Victoria and I love you all so much, and I could not have asked for a more close-knit family of friends.  Your welcome home gathering for her was amazing; YOU GIRLS ARE ALL AMAZING!!!  I would also like to thank Mrs. Pitman, whose daughter, Courtney, was guest playing, for helping to care for Victoria on the field.  Thank you also to Irma for helping taxi my herd of children.   Although not a part of Arsenal, two very special Lonestar parents took care of Victoria at the time of her second surgery, so I would like to give a huge thank you to Dr. Patrick Molligan and Chris Blackwell, RN.

For service above and beyond the call of duty, my greatest appreciation goes out to Angel and Rudy, and the Hiracheta family - Jerry, Yolanda and Hannah.  Angel, Rudy and Jerry - the speed and care with which you all worked to make Victoria comfortable on the field, and the support you gave us both during the hours that followed are the traits of true men.  Yolanda, thank you so much for filling in as a mother to her when I was not able to be there, for painting her toenails after surgery, and for capturing it all on video for me.  Hannah, thank you for being such a good friend, singing country songs, and keeping her entertained, even when she was hurting.  Angel, what can I say... I owe you so much.  Thank you for caring for her like she was your own.  Thank you for calling me constantly to keep me informed, and thank you for being there through her second surgery.

The Arsenal family has been such a blessing to me and Victoria.  May God bless each and every one of you.

With great love and respect,
Victoria Appleton and Maria Appleton-Lesly
