OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAM |
The US Youth Soccer Olympic
Development Program (ODP) was formed
in 1977 to identify a pool of
players in each age group from which
a National Team will be selected for
international competition providing
high-level training to benefit and
enhance the development of players
at all levels.
Each State Association
holds ODP try-outs on an annual
basis. These tryouts are
conducted by state association
coaches who are recognized for
their ability to identify and
train players with superior
skills. Players are evalutated
on the four components that make
up a soccer player:
.
1. Technique
2. Tactics

COACHING NEWS - 98
& 97 BOYS |
Gibbs
Keeton
New Head Coach of '98 Boys
Keeton,
a native of El Paso, Texas, finished
his collegiate career in 2003 where
he played at Paradise Valley CC,
Grand Canyon University and for the
Arizona Sahuaros PDL team in
Phoenix. In addition to his
on-field accomplishments, Keeton has
recently completed his Masters
degree in Health Exercise Sport
Sciences at Texas Tech University.
Not only does he bring with him a
strong commitment and dedication to
coaching, but also vast experience
and has held USSF National 'D'
license since 2003.
|
Aaron Yoshinobu
Aside from
teaching eager Texas Tech students
about Geology, Dr. Yoshinobu finds
time to give countless hours
to building and improving Arsenal
FC. Not only does he serve in many
roles for the club, including Club
Vice President, he was elected by
the parents of the '97 boys team to
become the new head coach. Aaron
recently obtained his "E" license
and is looking to get his "D" in the
very near future. With this
coaching assignment and the addition
of Gibbs Keeton, Aaron has stepped
down from his position as interim
head coach for the '98 boys.
However, he wishes to thank all the
'98 players and parents for their
wonderful commitment to him and the
team.
In
other news, Aaron
recently competed in a 50K run
(a mere 31 miles!) in Bandera,
Texas. He placed 27th out of
124 runners and finished in just
under 6 hours. Way to go,
Aaron. You now have 14 boys
that can join you the next time.

3 v 3 COMPETITION - 94 GIRLS |
|
The Lubbock Arsenal '94 3 v 3 team swept up
the competition in Oklahoma City winning
first place in the tournament. Coach Angel
may have had the smallest roster, but he did
have the best goal firing power. With the
first place win in the state to the north,
the girls are now qualified to play in the
next tournament in Round Rock, Texas for
Winter Nationals. Avery, Ebony, Shannon,
and Victoria only allowed one point scored
against them for the entire tournament.
They scored over 6 points in every
game.
Now comes the trip down south to play for
Nationals. Avery, Marrissa, and Shannon may
have to play for nationals without
substitutes. They are excited about the
trip and the chance to play for the
Nationals trophy. Or maybe they are excited
about getting out of town again and eating
at Chuy's! After all they did pick the
only hotel within walking distance of the
restaurant!
Good luck 3 v 3 girls! |

This month, the spotlight is on two
great Arsenal FC players: Colt and
Adam
Colt is in the 6th grade at
Frenship Terra Vista Middle
School. He loves Reading and
Science. He is involved in the
GT program and has future
problem solving competitions
every other month. He makes
straight A's and seems like
school is a breeze. He's in
Pre-Athletics which gives the
coaches a chance to see who's
talented in which sports and he
has really enjoyed football. He
doesn't mind the running since
he's in great shape from
soccer. He wants the school to
get soccer at the higher levels
but, who knows? Colt loves to
play video games. X box 360,
PSP, and Wii are all his
favorites. He also loves to
ride the 4 wheeler, ripstick,
and go fishing with his pa.
They camp out and have a blast.
Colt has one sister Riley, 15.
And, we mentioned in the last
article that he plays snare and
marimba. He got a snare drum
for Christmas, so it's a little
loud around the house sometimes.
Adam has 2 sisters, Alyvia is 13
and Leah is 11, and one brother,
Luke, 9. He first played soccer
when he was 4 and hasn't had any
interest in playing other sports
(yet). He is also interested in
art, specifically drawing and
painting. He loves to hunt with
his dad and passed a gun safety
course a couple of years ago.
When he isn't playing war games
with his BB guns, you'll find
him with hammer and nails and
old, torn-down fence pickets,
building picture frames, boxes
and small tables and plant
stands. Lately he has been
totally absorbed in PSP and Wii
games (go Mario)! In school
(Evans Middle School - 6th
grade), he likes science, math,
social studies, and of
course, PE. This first semester
he made straight A's! Over the
Christmas break, Adam spent a
few days on his Uncle's farm
near Slaton driving a tractor in
his cotton field. His Uncle was
greatful for the help, Adam was
thrilled to drive a huge
machine, and Adam's mom was
terrified at the sight of Adam
behind the wheel, especially
when he popped a wheelie! Adam
is involved with the youth group
at his church (Redeemer Lutheran
Church) and attends FCA meetings
at school. He also serves as an
acolyte at his church and
attends summer church camp at
Ceta Glen every July. Adam loves
to make people laugh ("I am Jose
Jalapeno") and would love to
challenge "I Beat Pete" to a
pogo-stick jumping contest! Any
ideas on how to make that an
Arsenal fundraising event??!!!

| The LAFC '98
Girls would like to welcome Sierra Honesto
to their indoor squad. She has been doing a
great job and can play anywhere on the
field. They would also like to welcome Emma
Peach who has done a terrific job all
around. The coaches thank all of the
regular players for their commitment to the
team and for hanging in there during the
off-season practices. |
|
This month the 98's would
like to introduce Trenton Gage Vaughn.
Trenton is a stalwart and one of the
hardest working players on the team.
But, off the pitch T enjoys math in
school and shooting guns at home (Watch
out, Chris!). He has his own .22 rifle
and loves to draw up football plays to
orchestrate with his friends after
school. Trenton is a caring boy who
tends to put other's needs ahead of his
own. But, at the end of the day, Trenton
is outside working on his skills. And,
it shows!
When not using his hard head to evacuate
the ball from the penalty box, Zack
Hogan practices taekwondo. He has a
yellow belt and only uses his skills on
his dad when told to do his homework.
Hai-yah!
Our one true left-footer, Jared Castro
learned his beautiful dribbling
technique because his parents allow him
to dribble throughout the house, as long
as he doesn't touch the furniture. When
not playing soccer, Jared follows Texas
Tech athletics and hopes to get a dodge
ball scholarship so he can attend the
university! He also likes baseball and
basketball. And, according to his dad,
Jared's cell phone has 'CPS' on speed
dial, in case he accidentally hits the
furniture with the soccer ball.
Last but not least, Keenan Judge, the
MVP of the Fall 2008 season. His mom,
Mardie, reports that Keenan has no
outside interests besides soccer (wink
wink). Actually, Keenan loves all sports
and enjoys baseball, basketball, and
that strange American tradition,
'throwball'. He also loves math and
collects sports memorabilia.
