HAPPY
NEW YEAR

Indoor Soccer
Beginning January 7th, many of
our current LAFC players will be
enjoying some time on the indoor
turf. They will be joined by
approximately 20 guests outside
of the current Arsenal family.
Arsenal FC will be represented
by 6 teams. If you signed up,
please be sure to pay your
registration fee by
1/1/09. Although the rosters
are full, a few spaces have
become available. If you know
of an interested player, have
them contact the club
manager at clubmanager@lubbockarsenalfc.com

The
'97 and '98 Boys teams would
like to send their best
wishes to their coach,
Sergio Tristan, who has been
deployed for a second tour
in Iraq. We all hope that
he stays safe and returns
soon.

Welcome New Coaches
Two
new coaches have joined the
Arsenal FC coaching
staff. Chris Moreno is a
D-licensed coach with many
years of playing and
coaching experience. In
addition to being the new 97
Boys Head Coach, he also
works with the Texas Tech
women's club team. He
currently plays semi-pro
indoor soccer, too. Gibbs
Keeton will be coming on
board in just a few short
weeks as the Head Coach for
the 98 Boys. Gibbs is an
assistant trainer with the
TTU women's NCAA team He
recently earned his M.S. in
Exercise
Physiology. Currently, he
is D-licensed and will be
getting his C-license at the
IMG Academy in Florida in
early January 2009.

The LAFC 97 Boys will be
representing the West Texas
Premiere League at the State Cup
in May. Great job guys!

Have you checked out
GotSoccer.com? There you
will find national, state
and regional rankings of
soccer teams. In the U-15
girls division, you'll find
our Arsenal girls listed
as #25 in North Texas and
#189 in Region 3. This is
great, but Arsenal is still
looking toward that #1
spot. This team is also
ranked #5 in the Lake
Highland Division III after
this fall 08 season. Way to
go, Lubbock Ladies.

Blankets for the Homeless
There are 50 to 70
homeless people that are without shelter
in Lubbock every night. Some say there
are over 100 at times. They can only
stay at the Salvation Army for three
nights, so most sleep wherever they
can. There is a large group that sleep
on the ground outside the downtown
library. With the weather getting
colder and colder, the U-15 girls are
collecting blankets to give to the
homeless. They don't have to be new,
just clean and in good condition. The
girls will deliver Christmas goodies,
sandwiches and blankets after their
Christmas party this year. They hope to
collect blankets throughout the winter
to take to various homeless kitchens, so
that they can be given out on cold
winter nights. If you have an old
blanket you would like to donate, please
give it to a U-15 girl. These girls
believe the only time someone should be
cold is when you're watching your child
play soccer! Share the warmth.

Everyone knows you have to be smart to
play soccer, but who knew that music
would be so important too. The 97 boys
are quite a talented crew. Colt Cagle
is goalie and percussion. Christian
Rocha and Zach Appleton also play
percussion, and both are strikers. The
percussion section is rounded out by
Angel Gutierrez who is a defender. Zack
Smith is a striker and sweeper but can
also play a mean French horn. It
doesn't hurt that he's also the fastest
kid in 6th grade. Peyton Elliott, the
bassoon-playing wild man, is also a key
striker for the team. Collin Couch
plays defender and trumpet. Jarod Cloud
also spends time as a trumpet player
but is a midfielder on the pitch.
Now the rest of the team may not
play musical instruments, but they
play in concert on the field.
Thomas Herrera is a sweeper and
midfielder on the soccer field, but
he also plays football and
baseball. Alex Loredo is
well-rounded as a striker, sweeper,
member of the chess club and he
loves to dance. Trae Exum is a
striker and midfielder but is also
known as the smartest kid on the
team. He's in 5 AP classes and
skipped the 4th grade. AJ
Garza-Arredondo plays midfield
and striker. If FC
Barcelona doesn't pick him up, he's
determined to be a professional
video game player. While not
supporting the team as a midfielder,
Adam Beikmann can be found hunting.
As the best runner in his school,
Jacob Sanchez is a member of the
cross country team and plays both as
a striker and defender for Arsenal.
What a talented group of players!

OUTSTANDING LADIES - 98 GIRLS |
| The 98 girls have
been through a lot this season. They
started out with a full team, but before
the season even started they lost players.
Every game was played with a short roster,
but you would never know it. The 10 girls
we have played with heart and had such team
work. They never had a bad attitude or gave
up. All the parents and coaches are very
proud to have seen this team play. We all
know they will just get better and cant wait
to see what happens in the spring! Thanks
Leah, Victoria, Destiny, Tiffany, Kendra,
Analissa, Kody, Adrienne, Gabriela and
Hailee for all you have shown us and
allowing us to see the true love for soccer. |

After wrapping up the Fall WTPL
schedule in early November, the
Arsenal '98 Boys played in the
Dallas Texans Fall Festival on 22-23
November and went 1-1-1. The 98's
came out strong, beating the best
D1 team in Austin, 1 nil with a
second period score by Alex
Gonzales. In game two, Alex again
found the back of the net, as did
guest player, Ian Ward. However,
time expired before the 98 Gunners
could find the back of the net to
equalize and lost 3-2. The last
game, played beneath the lights, was
the best match of the tournament and
found the 98's playing efficiently,
but without a clear shot on goal.
The match ended 0 to 0. While
disappointed that they didn't get to
the championship, the team played
very well and came back to Lubbock
feeling optimistic and excited about
playing against Metroplex club teams
and more than holding their own.
Next up for the 98's is the
winter indoor season peppered
with a tournament or two in the
winter-spring. We look forward
to building an even stronger
team in the spring season and
are excited about the growing
comraderie that is shared
between the players and the
parents.
Each month we'll
highlight some of the fine
achievements of our '98 Boys,
outside of soccer (you
mean there's life outside of
soccer?).
Kolby Wilson, #10.
Kolby is one of the fastest
players on the pitch and came in
4th out of over 130 in the
City-wide cross-country
tournament held in late October
at Mae Simmons Park. Great job,
Kolby!
Viren Vasandani, #4.
When not lighting up the
mid-field, Viren changes from
cleats to loafers and plays
violin in the Lubbock Youth
Symphony Orchestra. Much like
club soccer, LYSO requires
tryouts and is highly
competitive, taking only the
best young musicians in Lubbock.
Way to go, V!
Weston Yoshinobu, #21.
Weston also runs on the Roscoe
Wilson cross-country team and
has participated in the
City-wide race as well as
winning the 2008 Wrangler Run,
held at Tech Terrace. Keep up
the endurance, General!
James Lovering, #1.
When not donning goalie gloves,
James is a Weeblo Scout and
spends his off-hours working on
camping and out-door projects
with his family (when not
practicing his juggling or
shooting on goal in the
backyard!).

Do you have a problem or
concern?
Occassionally an issue comes up
on a team that a parent, player
or coach may find concerning,
and they want to discuss it with
someone within the club. At
the last Board Meeting, a
process was established to
confidentially discuss any
matters of concern. The
process begins by speaking with
your Team Representative. If
you need further help, the Team
Reps can guide you to the next
step.
